The Hidden Cost of Salon Hair (And the Simpler Alternative Women Love)

The hidden cost of hair salons and a simpler solution with double ended braid in dreadlock extensions

“I love them… but are they worth the money?”

It’s a fair question. When you first look at the price of a full set of braid in extensions, it can feel like a bigger purchase than your typical salon visit.

But here’s the truth most women don’t realize until they actually run the numbers. The way most of us have been caring for our hair for years is far more expensive in the long run.

And that’s before we even talk about what those products and dyes are doing to your body.

My Wake-Up Call About the Hair Industry

Wildcrafted Beauty didn’t start in a lab. It started with a reaction.

After a completely normal salon visit to color my hair, I woke up hours later in absolute panic. My scalp was burning, my face was swelling, and my breathing felt tight.

What started as a scary moment quickly turned into a $3,000 emergency room visit.

And that was just the beginning.

Over the years that followed, I began learning more about what was actually inside many common beauty products and hair dyes. Ingredients like ammonia, PPD, coal tar dyes, and synthetic fragrances are incredibly common in typical hair care.

These chemicals don’t just sit on your hair. They absorb directly through your scalp and skin into your body.

The more I researched, the more I realized how many women were experiencing hormone disruption, skin reactions, chronic fatigue, anxiety, and inflammation that often traced back to the products they were putting on their bodies every single day.

Years later, the damage to my own hormones became clear. I ended up spending over $10,000 on hormone therapy trying to repair the imbalance my body had developed.

That experience forced me to ask a question most women never stop to think about.

Why are we putting toxic chemicals on one of the most absorbent parts of our body just to feel beautiful?

That question started a journey that eventually led to the creation of Wildcrafted Beauty and our braid in extensions.A way for women to feel confident in their hair without damaging their health or weakening their natural hair.

But there was another discovery that surprised me even more.

Salon Hair Is Quietly Draining Your Wallet

Most women visit the salon every 6–8 weeks for cuts and color upkeep. Over time, those appointments add up more than most people realize.

Across five years, the typical cost of salon cut and color upkeep averages around $4,000–$5,000 depending on where you live and how often you go.

For women in higher-end salons it can easily climb above $8,000.

That doesn’t include styling products, color protecting shampoos, deep conditioning masks, heat tools, and styling sprays.

Many of those products contain synthetic fragrances, preservatives, and chemicals that women apply day after day without ever being told what they might be doing to their bodies.

It’s the normal routine most of us grew up with. But it’s actually one of the most expensive and physically taxing beauty habits women have.

What Wearing Braid In Dreadlock Extensions Actually Costs

Now let’s compare that to wearing braid in dreadlock extensions.

A full set of braid in extensions can last years when cared for properly. Women typically wear them for about six weeks at a time, take a short break, and reinstall.

When you average that out over five years, the cost of a set of braid in extensions comes out to roughly $22 per wear.

That’s it. About the cost of lunch.

Unlike salon visits, you’re not paying again every time your roots grow out.

But The Real Value Isn’t Just the Money

Saving money is great. But most women who switch to braid in extensions tell us something else first.

Life becomes easier.

Instead of spending hours styling hair every week, braid in dreadlocks are low maintenance, ready in minutes, always styled, and protective for your natural hair.

They protect your hair from heat styling, chemical dyes, and over processing. Your natural hair underneath actually has the chance to grow stronger and healthier without constant chemical exposure.

For many women it’s not just a style change. It’s a complete shift in how they care for their bodies and their beauty routine.

What If I Don’t Like The Color?

This is one of the biggest fears women have before ordering braid in extensions. And honestly it’s completely valid.

Choosing a hair color online can feel scary.

That’s why we created our Color Love Guarantee.

If you receive your extensions and the color isn’t what you expected, you can swap them for another shade. No stress. No regret purchase.

We also offer payment plans so you don’t have to pay everything upfront.

Because we believe confidence should be easy, not stressful.

The Real Question Isn’t “Are They Worth It?”

The real question is this.

How much are you already spending trying to maintain your hair the old way?

Salon visits.
Hair dyes.
Damage repair products.
Styling tools.
Hours of time every week.

And sometimes, unfortunately, even the hidden cost of what those products may be doing to your body over time.

For many women, braid in dreadlock extensions aren’t just a hairstyle. They’re a simpler, healthier, and often cheaper way to feel confident every day.

I’m 64. Have waist length dark brown and gray hair. Extensions are new to me and wondering if these can be incorporated with my already long hair. Also, what questions to I ask when looking for someone who puts them in? How many bundles should I buy? Thank you for your help.
