How Many Dread Bundles Do I Need? (Shorties, Longs, or the Combo)

Womena wearing dreadlock extensions enjoying lunch outside together

You found your way here for a reason.

Maybe you've been saving pins for months. Maybe you finally watched that transformation video that made something click inside you. Maybe you've been telling yourself "one day" for long enough that one day is now officially today.

Whatever got you here, here's what you need to know:

The only thing standing between you and the most confident hair of your life is knowing exactly how many bundles to order.

So let's figure that out right now. No guessing. No "it depends." By the time you finish reading this, you're going to know exactly what to get, which style is built for your life, and why.

First, Meet Your Three Options

Before we talk numbers, you need to understand what you're choosing between, because this is where most women get stuck. The answer isn't just a number. It's also about which type of dread is going to feel like you. And girl, you have three beautiful ways to go.

Option 1: All Shorties

Shorties are lightweight, full, and absolutely beautiful. They sit on your head without fighting you. No tension headaches at the end of the day. No sore neck after a few hours. Just big, gorgeous, full hair that you can actually wear comfortably day after day.

Shorties are for you if:

You're getting dreads for the first time and want to ease in
You have a sensitive scalp, migraines, or any neck discomfort
You want serious volume and fullness without added length
You want flexibility to build your look over time

Here's what women don't expect about Shorties:

they are not a starter option or a lesser option. They are stunning on their own and one of the most popular choices we carry. Full, fluffy, confident dreads that you can wear all day and forget you even have in. That is not a small thing.

Option 2: All Longs

Longs are dramatic. Bold. They make a statement the moment you walk in the room. More length, more movement, more of that sweeping dreadlock look that stops people mid-sentence.

Longs are for you if:

You want that long, head-turning dreadlock look
You want a full dramatic look with fewer individual bundles
You already know you love the feel of longer extensions
You've worn heavier styles before and loved it

Longs are not for everyone, and that is not a knock. It's just honest. But if you know your head, if you've worn longer styles before and felt amazing in them or have dreamed of having long, butt length hair, you are going to be absolutely in love.

Option 3: The Combo (Longs + Shorties)

This is honestly one of the most beautiful ways to wear Wildcrafted dreads, and more women should know about it.

Here's what the combo does:

the Longs give you that gorgeous length and movement through the body of your hair, and the Shorties fill in around the crown, the sides, and the hairline where longer dreads can sometimes feel like a lot. You get the drama of length and the comfort of a lighter feel exactly where you need it most.
The combo is for you if:

You want length AND you want to feel good wearing them every single day
You love the idea of Longs but want to be smart about where the weight sits
You want a look that's full and balanced from every angle
You want it all, because honestly? You can have it all.

Okay, How Many Do You Need?

Here it is. Clear, direct, no fluff.

All Shorties: 13 to 16 Bundles

This is your number for a full head of beautiful Shorties. The range exists because head sizes and part patterns vary, but 13 bundles gives you gorgeous full coverage and 16 gives you extra density if you like your hair looking very thick and lush.

Most women land right around 13 to 14 bundles and absolutely love the result. If you have a larger head or want your hair to look extra full and dramatic, go 15 to 16.

This is your choice if:

You want comfort. You want fullness. You want to be able to wear your dreads every single day without overthinking it. The fullness alone is absolutely stunning.

All Longs: 10 to 13 Bundles

You need fewer bundles because each one carries more visual length and impact. 10 bundles creates a beautiful full long look. 13 bundles gives you extra density and thickness that makes the hair feel very rich and voluminous.

Most women who go all Longs order around 10 to 12 bundles. If you want that really full, magazine-worthy long dread look, go closer to 13.

This is your choice if:

You want drama. You want length. You want to shake your hair and feel every inch of it. You've done your research, you know what you want, and you are ready for it.

The Combo: 10 Longs + 6 Shorties

16 bundles total puts you right in the sweet spot for a full, balanced, intentional look. The length of the Longs carries through the body of your hair while the Shorties keep the crown and sides feeling just right.

This is the pick that gives you a complete set from root to tip, and it is a gorgeous one.

This is your choice if:

You want length but you also want to feel good wearing them every day. You want a look that's full and balanced from every angle, and you don't want to choose between dramatic and comfortable because you shouldn't have to.

How to Know Which One Is Right for You

Let's make this simple.

Go all Shorties if:

You're new to dreads, you have any scalp sensitivity, or you just love a full fluffy look. You will not miss the length. The fullness alone turns heads.

Go all Longs if:

You've worn longer heavier styles before, you loved it, and you specifically want that long flowing dreadlock look. You're ready. Go get it.

Do the combo if:

You want length and you want all-day comfort. 10 Longs and 6 Shorties is a complete, intentional, full look that delivers everything at once.

There is no wrong answer here. There is only the answer that is right for your head, your lifestyle, and the look you've been dreaming about.

Hi, I have short curly hair and have been wanting to try dreads. I’m currently going gray. I have a lot of sliver at the roots and dark brown on back. I feel like the shorties would be best trying to determine how many I would need. And what colors. I am wanting the gray tones.

Hi, I have long medium to thin hair it’s platinum. Do you only sale by pieces to get installed or do you have a particular a full lace wig? I’d love some boho platnium blonde long dreads. Not thick. Possibly mixed with braids, jewels and wraps? Thank you for your time! Kelly Madamba

Hi! I’m considering your wavy dreads for the first time :) I have White Silver Gray curly hair. I would live some depth and would love to try the Smoky Amber / Venus. Do you know when they will be back in stock?
