Dreadlock Beginner Guide!
Sometimes, the best things in life start with just 20 seconds of courage.
That tiny window where you pause the doubt,
where you let yourself imagine how it could feel,
how you could feel.
When we look at the happiest, most radiant women in our Wildcrafted Beauty community (Our facebook group that has more than 17,000 women), one thing stands out:
They all had a moment where they chose to try something new.
They gathered their courage, chose a new look, and the result? Confidence unlocked.
They felt freer, sexier, and more fulfilled.
Not because they changed who they were… but because they finally saw her in the mirror again.
Hair has always held power. You know that.
It’s tied to how we see ourselves, how we show up, and how we walk through the world.
So many women don’t touch their hair for years.
They play it safe, they stop playing altogether,
and without even noticing, the stagnancy shows up in other places too,
in how we get dressed,
in how we let our partner see us,
in how we stop showing up in photos,
in how we slowly stop recognising the woman looking back at us.
But here’s the truth no one tells us growing up:
You are allowed to evolve.
You are allowed to choose a new look.
You are allowed to feel beautiful again, without explanation or permission.
If you’ve been quietly eyeing dreadlocks and wondering if they’re “too much” or “not for you,” this post is your safe corner.
Let’s walk through 5 of the biggest things women ask us before they take the leap.
1. Are dreadlocks permanent?
Nope. Not these.
Our dreadlocks are synthetic and temporary, they’re heat-resistant, salon-grade fibres. They look real, but they are totally non-committal.
You can wear them for a few weeks, take them out, and switch it up again when you feel like it.
Think of it like trying on a new version of yourself, without the pressure.
2. Is it hard to install them? Will I need help?
If you can braid a simple 3-strand braid, you can install our dreadlocks.
We send you a full beginner-friendly video course when you shop with us, step-by-step guidance you can follow at home…. It’s actually kind of meditative once you get the hang of it.
But you can also find installers near you if you’d rather have someone do them for you!
3. How many bundles do I need? Is it expensive?
The full look you see in most of our photos? That’s usually 12+ bundles of long dreadlocks or 15+ of the short ones.
But here’s the thing:
-Some women start with 3 to 4 bundles and build their set over time.
- One bundle has 5 strands… we’ve made it flexible on purpose, because we get that budgets are real.
We also offer payment plans so you can ease in without financial overwhelm.
4. What’s the best look to start with?
If you’re new, we always suggest something like this one
What’s in this look?
5 bundles Golden Chestnut
5 bundles Smokey Amber
5 bundles Goldie
soft, natural tones, medium length (depending on your height) lightweight and incredibly wearable.
It gives you volume, style, and a confidence boost without feeling too “out there.”
P.S. We have two lengths, shorties and longs. For beginners we recommend shorties and then once you are comfortable and happy with how they feel on you, you can start going for longs!
This look has become the go-to for first-timers. It’s safe, yet still bold.
It lets you dip your toes into transformation without jumping off the deep end.
5. Will they make me hot or itchy? How long can I wear them?
Great questions.
Our synthetic dreadlocks are lightweight and breathable.
In fact, because your scalp is parted it actually gets more airflow, not less.
Most women say they feel cooler, not hotter. Even during the summer!
“Mine keep my scalp cooler in the summer because of the air flow and I don’t have sweaty hair sticking all over my face and neck. I work outside a lot.” —- Mindy B
“I found that my scalp was nice and cool during my Caribbean cruise, even when I wore a hat.” — Jennifer B
“I'm post menopause and I still get BAD hot flashes and I notice when my dreads are in they are less severe and less often.” — Michele B
“I have found that since having my dreads (full set, full time) it has allowed more airflow throughout my scalp and I do stay a bit cooler and cool off faster after working up a sweat doing chores (or just walking to the mailbox). Have fun with yours. Hope you love them!” —-Evelena P
Itchiness can happen for some in the first few days, just like with any new protective style, you have to give your scalp a couple of days to adjust. But don’t worry,
we’ve got you covered with our Cooling Veil which is basically a magical itch-relief spray made to help you adjust better! You’ll be back to comfort in no time.
As for longevity? You can wear them for around 3 to 4 weeks, then take them out for about a week and reinstall the exact same set. Yes, you can put in the same one. We only recommend removing them briefly because while your natural hair is in a protective style, it still sheds normally. Since those strands can’t fall away as they usually would, they remain trapped in the braid. Taking a short break allows your scalp and natural hair to breathe, reset, and feel refreshed before you pop them back in again!

I’ve always admired the faux dread look with the curly ends, beautiful adornment, feathers and beautiful colors. I’ve always wanted to get some. I’ve found your ad on Pinterest and am saving up to get a few bundles. There were some on Etsy that were already made the way I wanted but they are insanely priced. I also love that you’re are non committal. So that way if I decide that it’s not actually a good look on me or that I end up not being happy with how I look with them then I can just remove them. I look forward to purchasing from this company!

How long do you go without them before installing them again? How do do you let your hair rest?
